Construction Labourer

The Position: Working for our Winvan Paving division (New Westminster), you will be part of a team responsible for performing various duties on projects. You will generally work in the capacity of transferring from one task to another and may also operate a variety of hand and power tools as well as some equipment. You will complete a variety of other general labor assignments such as cleaning and prepping sites.

You will be the Company’s ambassador to the general public, customers, testing agencies, government agencies, sub-contractors and suppliers.


  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task;
  • Properly follow all company policies regulations for safe working procedures and environment;
  • Wears appropriate personnel protective equipment and uses necessary safety devises. Have required personal tools and/or personnel protective equipment in good order;
  • Maintains job sites, vehicles and equipment in a neat and orderly manner;
  • Operates various hand and power tools such as shovels, tamps, rakes and jackhammers as assigned to support the work of the Operating Division;
  • Assists in loading and unloading of materials and equipment in a manner to prevent damage to company’s equipment and customer’s property;
  • Be knowledgeable with and operate all machines in a safe and deliberate manner. Performs fine tuning and troubleshooting of machines and or material problems as instructed by your supervisor;
  • Signal operators of equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and materials with shovel;
  • Follow direction of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite;
  • Assists in the training of new or inexperienced employees;
  • Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials;
  • Lifts, carries and holds material, tools and supplies;
  • Assists in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices;
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor;
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools;
  • Maintain a clean job site; pick up tools and equipment in order to eliminate potential hazards;
  • Perform daily pre–and–post inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with company policies;
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order;
  • Responsible for notifying supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired;
  • Shifts may vary according to project;
  • Report any problems to your manager;
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; and
  • Perform any other general duties as specified.



  • Previous related experience in construction field is preferred;
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times;
  • Report to work at the designated start time;
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required;
  • Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary;
  • Be able to work overtime when required;
  • Maintain current driver’s license;
  • Have a Motor Vehicle Record that meets company standards;
  • Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold;
  • Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures;
  • Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co–workers or supervisors with other duties as required;
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas;
